Total Swimming Review of 2012

Not only has this been the greatest year for sport in Great Britain due to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it has also been a fantastic and memorable year for Total Swimming.

Here are some of the highlights:

Mobile Swimming Pool Programmes

In 2012 Total Swimming delivered four British Gas Pools 4 Schools and six of the Mayor of London’s Make a Splash programmes at deserving schools in Birmingham, Ashington, Coventry, Hull, Merton, Brent, Camden, Tottenham, Croydon and Newham. In the process we taught over 10,000 children and 4,000 people from deprived areas to swim.

These projects were launched by Olympians including Rebecca Adlington, Mark Foster, Duncan Goodhew, Adam Whitehead, Melanie Marshall, Katie Dawkins and Katie Skelton, delivering a fantastic and memorable experience for the children involved.

The Big Summer Splash

In the summer, Total Swimming delivered the open air Big Summer Splash festival at the Decathlon store in Surrey Quays, in conjunction with Speedo and the ASA/Community Swimming. This saw two of our mobile pools on site delivering swimming lessons and other activities for the local community. Over 6 weeks, the event was attended in excess of 20,000 times.

British Swimming Heroes Tour (Presented by British Gas)

In August and September, Total Swimming took over 30 Team GB and Paralympics GB athletes on tour to five cities across the UK – London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Swansea and Coventry, to inspire children to take part in each of the four aquatic Olympic sports. The athletes involved included Olympic medallists Rebecca Adlington, Michael Jamieson, David Davies and Keri-Anne Payne, plus James Goddard, Hannah Miley, Sascha Kindred, Nyree Kindred and many more. Each of the event days was presented by Steve Parry and the whole tour was a fantastic experience for those involved.

Zoggs Oceans of Fun Days

Total Swimming delivered eight Zoggs Oceans of Fun Days in leisure centres across England, using Olympic athletes to inspire thousands of children to enjoy aquatic sports. Ambassadors at the events included Steve Parry, Adam Whitehead, Melanie Marshall, Grant Turner and Fran Leighton.

Everyone Active Leisure Centre Openings

Total Swimming was thrilled to organise opening events for SLM/Everyone Active leisure centres in Plymouth and St Albans. These fantastic state of the art venues provide high quality swimming facilities for local communities as well as fantastic training facilities for elite and club level athletes. The launch events featured appearances from British Olympic medallists David Davies, Steve Parry, Keri-Anne Payne and Jo Jackson.

British Gas Swimming Championships Masterclasses

In March, Total Swimming invited the first children to use the London Aquatics Centre at the British Gas Swimming Championships, which were the selection trials for London 2012. With Olympians Adam Whitehead and Melanie Marshall, local children from Newham and also those who participated in British Gas Pools 4 Schools and Make a Splash had a truly unique experience. Watching the trials sessions in the morning, the children then jumped into the Olympic pools in the afternoon for a special masterclass followed by a ‘race an Olympian’ in the 50 metre competition pool.

Learn to Swim Academies

Our Learn to Swim Academies in Merseyside and Scotland continue to go from strength to strength, adding new venues and teaching even more children and adults to swim.

Thank you to all of our sponsors and partners who have enabled us to achieve so much in 2012. These include (in no particular order!) the ASA/British Swimming, British Gas, the Mayor of London, Decathlon, Speedo, Zoggs, SLM/Everyone Active, Thames Water, Community Swimming, Pro-Active South and East, the Pears Foundation, Liverpool City Council and many more local authorities and leisure trusts.

We look forward to an even bigger and better 2013.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.
