Olympic Medallist Sharron Davies Launches London's Big Summer Splash
Whilst the world's elite will be making waves at the Olympic Park when London 2012 kicks off next week, the Londoners can make their own 'Big Summer Splash' with a special mobile pools festival event at Decathlon's store in Surrey Quays.
With Britain suffering from one of the wettest summers in history, Commonwealth and Olympic medal-winning swimmer Sharron Davies brought some sunshine with her to the site near London's Canary Wharf and gave it her seal of approval, along with fellow Olympic medallist Steve Parry of Total Swimming.
Built by Total Swimming for Decathlon UK in partnership with Speedo, 'The Big Summer Splash' sees the Decathlon store in Surrey Quays transform its car park with two fully-heated, life guard-patrolled temporary swimming pools, plus a beach that would make the Spanish envious.
Supported by British Swimming, this special event is open seven days a week from Monday 23rd July through to Sunday 2nd September, and parents and children can look forward to sampling an array of activities available free of charge with a free Decathlon card. Activities on offer will range from free swimming lessons for all ages and abilities, to water polo, aqua aerobics, snorkeling and other family-friendly water fun.
The Big Summer Splash ambassador Sharron Davies said: ‘As a parent and someone who is passionate about swimming, I’m delighted to be part of a project that makes swimming easily accessible to the local community. As well as being an important life skill, swimming is also a great way to have fun with the family and I really encourage everyone to come and try out this fantastic facility.’
Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, added: “With the Olympics and Paralympics less than two weeks away, this really is a fantastic, free facility for the local community and I urge everyone to take advantage over the coming six weeks.”
The Big Summer Splash is part of Decathlon’s biggest ever celebration of sport, encouraging families to unlock their hidden potential and take up a new sport together.
Managing Director Decathlon UK, Steve Dykes, said: “This is such a huge year for sport and at Decathlon UK we want families across the country to join us in our celebrations. We’re passionate about creating quality family time and putting parents and children alike on the path to healthier, more active lifestyles and we hope the Big Summer Splash will do just that.”
Speedo's Steve Lucas commented: “At Speedo we’ve long seen the benefits and enjoyment that swimming can bring to families and local communities so we’re excited to be involved in The Big Summer Splash and bringing swimming to Southwark.”
“We will be running a Goggle Clinic from 9am – 5pm on 20th and 21st July where you can receive free advice on finding the right pair and our Swimwear Amnesty will see 25% off on all Speedo purchases when you donate your old swimwear.”
The two temporary pools have been installed by Total Swimming with all swimming lessons provided by Community Swimming.
