Two great Guys !
Hours after Bury teenager James Guy won a Gold Medal at the World Aquatics Championships - his Mum delves into the family album to show how Total Swimming boss Steve Parry proved an inspiration 10 years ago!
As a nine year old junior swimmer James cherished his photo with Steve who had won an Olympic Medal a year earlier in Athens. The two met at Trafford Leisure Centre in 2005 and when Guy won his Gold medal in the 200 metre freestyle event in Kazan, his mum Cath wanted to share the moment when Steve was happy to pose for the picture which Guy had on his wall at home. Tweeting the photo she said “A young James with inspirational Steve Parry”.
And, as part of the BBC commentary team which has been giving great coverage to the Swimming Championships, it was fitting that Steve was there to cheer Guy home when he beat the Olympic silver medallist Sun Yang of China to claim his big win.
Steve, who is Total Swimming’s Managing Director, said “It was a very special moment when Guy touched first in the 200 metres. I’ve followed his progress through the junior ranks, to representing England , and then Commonwealth Gold in Glasgow. Now he's a world champion it's me that wants a picture with him ! "
