Steve Parry's Rio Diary - What a night of swimming in Rio
I have seen Michael Phelps complete the most amazing journey in sport, and what a privilege it was to be here!
I remember competing against him in 2000 at Sydney when he was a fresh faced 15-year-old, he launched his career that night by winning the 200m butterfly and he hasn’t done too badly since then.
- The first guy to compete in 5 Olympic finals for one event
- The only guy to win 4 gold medals in the same event
Phelp's Gold in the 200m medley for the 4th Games running is something I never thought I would see in swimming. It really was a history setting night with a packed house of 14,500 people cheering him on to win!
What a fantastic night and I absolutely loved being part of it!
Editor’s Footnote…although he didn’t mention it here ( because he is a modest guy!) our MD Steve actually BEAT Michael Phelps at the Olympics in Athens 2004 in the semi-final of the 200m Butterfly. Phelps took his revenge in the final, but Steve won Bronze - Britain’s first Olympic medal in the pool for 8 years.

In celebration of Michael Phelps' 22nd gold medal we thought we'd have a throwback to when Steve was mistaken for Michael Phelps in Beijing. I wonder if he is getting the same treatment in Rio?
