Dumfries and Galloway Council
Temporary 25m Swimming Pool
Following the temporary closure of the DG One Leisure Complex in October 2014, Dumfries and Galloway Council partnered with Total Swimming to provide a 25m temporary swimming pool to the residents of Dumfries. Housed on the car park of the Dumfries Ice Bowl near to the existing facility, the five lane, 25m pool is 1.2m deep and accommodates 60 swimmers at one time. Equipped with a range of ancillary services including fully accessible changing rooms, showers, toilets and reception area, the pool is housed in a fully insulated temporary housing unit.
The new facility ensures Dumfries and Galloway's service provision can continue following the closure of the DG One Leisure Complex, due to remedial work. It is being used for public swimming, lessons, and with clubs and schools also relocating to the new facility, continued revenue generation is being achieved. Leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council, Ronnie Nicholson comments: “The pool is a fantastic facility; not only can local residents continue to enjoy their swimming activities but it allows for essential remedial work on the existing leisure complex.”
Former Olympic medallist and Director of Total Swimming, Steve Parry adds: “I'm very proud to have completed our second 25m pool facility installation. The pool will serve as an integral part of the council's local leisure facilities over the next 2 years.”
The pool housing unit specification is a steel framed building which contains PVC coated walls. Coupled with their thermo-envelope translucent roofing system, the temporary structures boasts an efficient, environmentally-friendly and cost-effective heating system.
Within the housing unit, there are 6 unisex individual heated showers, full DDA compliant toilet and shower, male and female toilets, male and female changing with lockers and vanity units, store room and reception. This enables the solution to be a standalone facility, which provides zero disruption to the existing Ice Bowl Facility.
