The 'British Gas Pools 4 Schools' pool is a portable teaching facility designed to accommodate a full class of children in a specially designed teaching tank. The intervention program was designed to act as a catalyst for schools with poor access to swimming facilities, historically poor aquatic attainment rates and areas of deprivation who struggle to pay for facilities.
A successful National program in partnership with the Department for Children, Schools and Families paves the way for London wide 'Make a Splash - Pools 4 People' Road Show. The road show will take this facility to areas of the city with low levels of children achieving the National Curriculum standard which includes the requirement of swimming 25m at the end of Key Stage 2.
Combating low pass rates, inspiring schools to enjoy swimming whilst providing a key water safety message and up skilling Learn to Swim providers in the area are all key targets for the program.
It must be stressed that this program is designed as a 'kickstart' to combat poor attainment levels and not as an alternative to the current National Curriculum swimming program. Having worked in partnership with the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the ASA and the Youth Sports Trust, this program will maximise opportunities at all levels of swimming for all primary school pupils, whilst providing clear pathways into after schools participation.
As part of its wider agenda, it aims to encourage good health practices amongst young people, contribute to improved behaviour of young people both in and out of school, encourage participation by a wider spectrum of social groups and promote safe swimming within pools and the community.
This exciting programme also provides focused after schools opportunities involving many different community groups from PCT referrals, parent and child classes, sessions for people with a disability, the over 50's and other local community minority groups who do not traditionally participate in swimming or any forms of physically activity.
