The British Gas Big Dip 2011

The brainchild of Olympic medallist Steve Parry, The British Gas Big Dip 2011 was held on Clapham Common for six weeks over the summer period. Giving over 30,000 people the opportunity to experience summer swimming like never before, the event comprised of two 12m heated outdoor pools and a beach. Offering a fun day out for families, all visitors got the opportunity to make a splash in the heated pools, whilst relaxing on a sandy beach and enjoying swimming in a way that the local community pool doesn’t offer.

Activities offered included:

  • Zorbing
  • A giant slide
  • A surf rider
  • A bouncy castle
  • Bungee trampolines
  • Mini peddlarz
  • Paddlng pools
  • Beach volleyball

The British Gas Big Dip was built upon the success of a unique project that Total Swimming delivered in the summer of 2009, which brought swimming to one of London’s busiest areas by building a temporary pool on the South Bank of the River Thames. The pool taught over 2,000 people how to swim in just 4 weeks, proving just how beneficial and efficient the temporary pool solution really is. On top of teaching the facility gave people the chance to exercise and enjoy new aquatic activities.

The British Gas Big Dip hosted big name celebrities from the worlds of sport and entertainment, including:

  • Jodie Kidd
  • Mark Foster
  • Double Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington

Total Swimming's work in giving lessons and opportunities for schoolchildren and communities in the capital continues in 2015 with the Mayor of London's 'Make A Splash' programme of temporary pools which we take to schools without their own facilities.
