Total Swimming, in partnership with Bury Council, announced a UK-first – the construction of a £945k, 25m modular above-ground swimming pool.
Part of a wider scheme to bring a full range of accessible fitness facilities together on one site in Radcliffe in the Borough of Bury, the pool has a design life of 15 years and an anticipated engineering life of up to 30 years.
The scheme follows on from two other successful installations by modular pool specialists, Total Swimming, at Bridlington Leisure World and Dumfries Ice Bowl.
The pool facility, located in the heart of the community and close to local transport links, opened its doors to the public on Saturday 13 June 2015, the pool now attracts thousands of visitors every year.
A range of facilities have been built-in to the construction of the new pool. These include male and female changing villages with showers, toilets and lockers as well as a spectator viewing area for around 40 people.
The demand for modular pools by local authorities is growing, as councils begin to recognise the opportunities they can offer as a short, medium term or permanent solution.
The pools provide an alternative solution for leisure centres, trusts and operators during renovation projects – where revenue streams would otherwise be severely dented through cancelled swimming lessons and customers relocating to other facilities. Most importantly, for many local people the opening of temporary pools can prevent the loss of their main form of physical activity.
Bury Council spokesperson, Deputy Leader, Councillor Rishi Shori comments: “After the irreparable damage caused to the old pool by winter storms, we promised that we would create new facilities for the people of Radcliffe.
“This is a great new pool at a really convenient location where we can also offer gym, sport and fitness facilities all on one site.
“Although our long-term plan is to build a brand new permanent leisure centre on the site of the old one, it’s really important we continue to provide accessible fitness facilities to our residents. I’m sure the people of Radcliffe will make the most of the pool and what Radcliffe Leisure Centre as a whole has to offer.”
