Just returned home from Glasgow after competing in Scottish Long Course Nationals. It's a long way home, particularly after the recent attacks on the airport but the security people were very good and the flight left on time!!

The meet for us was just a 'see where we are meet', with training sessions of between 6,000m and 7,000m all the way up to the meet.

Aquateer Liam Tancock got to swim some different events to normal but raced very well, learning more and more each day. He swam 25.2 for the 50 fly, 1.03.9 in the 100 Brs, 25.6 in the 50 back (Led off the Relay team in 25.4), split 22.7 in the freestyle relay, and swum a 2.01.09 in the 200 IM, only missing the English Record by 0.03 sec! Liams main focus this cycle is to work on the development of all 4 strokes and to swim the 200IM as often as possible so as to aid his endurance for his 100 backstroke next year. Another area of focus is to work on his underwater work off the start and turn. In Scotland on his backstroke swims that was the main target, with all starts timed (on my watch) through 15m. Liams times from the gun were 6.3, 6.2, 6.2sec.

For Aquateer Caitlin McClatchey, other considerations had to be made. The Monday before the meet Caitlin pulled a muscle in her back during Weight Training. She was able to swim 7,000m sessions up to the meet but it was all backstroke and kick! By Thursday she had swum less than 200m freestyle. We came to the descision to withdraw from all races on Thursday and Friday, but swum the 400 freestyle on Saturday. Caitlin was not able still to swim at 100% but still swam a reasonable 4.11 with not too much discomfort to her back the next day. The following day she swam in the relays and even split a 25.8 in the freestyle relay! As her back was still not 100% we followed that swim (whilst the lactate was still high) with what I call a 'Removal Set'. It was 16x100 as 2 kick (hr-20), 1 free (hr-20), 1 back (hr-40) on 1.45/1.30. Her averages were 1.20 for the kick, 1.04 for the free and 1.19 for the back (all Long Course).

Julia Beckett and Chris Watkinson both recovering from injuries swam very well, recording some best times in some different events. Julia, better known for her Freestyle even swam a 28.06 in the 50 Butterfly!

For a change of stimulus, I sent Kate Haywood to Milan to take part in an International Meet in Milan sponsored by Armani! Kate won both the 50 Brs skins event (slowest time 32.3, last one 32.0) and the 100 Brs in 1.09.0. She swam fast and had a great time which is what its all about!

That's about all for now! No swimming tomorrow morning but we are doing weights. Then swimming in the afternoon! Swim Fast, Have Fun!
